One of the most influential and yet least understood institutions of democracy: the Dutch Senate (Eerste Kamer).
Some citizens know it exists, yet few understand how crucial its role really is or why 75 people whom we do not directly elect have the power to stop any law passed by the Parliament.
Together with Mei Li Vos, recently appointed President of the Senate, we try to find answers to all the questions:
How does the Senate really work behind the scenes? What does it mean to lead a chamber whose job is to safeguard the quality of laws, yet finds itself pulled into political storms? And how legitimate is a body that can kill any law, even though citizens don’t directly elect its members? In an era of rising polarization and declining trust in government, these questions matter more than ever.
