A LIVE PODCAST, NOT ON STAGE
Who: Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch since 1993
What: On June 25, 2020, we will be speaking to Kenneth Roth about the increasing opportunities for authoritarianism amidst the Covid-19 crisis. We will focus on the recent developments in Hungary, as the country pivots towards an autocratic government which curtails freedom of speech, destroys the system of checks and balances, and promotes xenophobia. We hope to address the effectiveness of the EU response as well through the specific role of the EUP in launching an Article 7 process and the subsequent response of the EU commission and the Member States. Finally, as executive director of one of the most prominent international human rights organizations we shall also illustrate other cases of rights repression during the current crisis.
